How to Safely Secure Wall-Mounted Clocks

So you finally found the perfect big statement clock to place in your home to keep you on track and in style with classic home décor trends. But how do you mount it to the wall? It’s not really something many of us think about until, well, we have to. And only then do we realize that such a large clock may require more than a simple nail in the wall. Before you go banging holes in the wall in your living room, follow these steps to guide you in safely securing your wall-mounted clocks.

Before You Get Started

The one thing you want to avoid (other than having multiple holes on your wall) is hanging the clock before you place the batteries in it. Before you get started with the mounting, be sure to put batteries in your clock. Once you’ve charged it up, take your time to find the perfect spot to hang it. Second guessing the location once it’s mounted to the wall is a hassle that should be avoided if possible.

Prepare the Clock for Mounting

Some clocks will have wiring on the back or some sort of mounting hardware that’s already been installed. If this is the case, then you’re in luck and can move onto the next step! However, if you don’t, then you’ll need to install your own. You can pick up a mounting kit at many hardware or home supply stores. These will make your clock more secure against the wall. However, mounting kits come in various sizes, so ensure that the one you select is suitable for the size of your clock. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions about sizing.

Preparing the Wall for Mounting

Once you’ve followed the instructions for installing the mount onto the back of the clock, it’s time to focus your attention on the wall. Once you’ve determined the exact spot in which you’re placing the clock, it’s time to get out your drill.

When it comes to hanging anything, it’s always better if you can locate a stud within the wall to provide better support. Use a stud finder to locate the best position on the wall. If you can only drill into the drywall then you will most likely require a wall anchor to secure the clock. Here what to do for each scenario:

If you have a stud available - you can simply drill the screw directly into the wall, keeping it as straight as possible, exposing about ½ - ¾ of an inch outside of the drywall.

If there isn’t a stud in the wall - then you will have to use a wall anchor. We recommend using a zip anchor since it’s both strong and easy to install. It’s important to note that zip wall anchors are available in a variety of weight capacities. Before purchasing one, make sure that it can hold approximately double the weight of your clock, to be safe.

To install the anchor, simply tap a small hole into the wall that is smaller than the anchor. Then, using a screwdriver, screw the anchor in until it’s flush with the wall without making it too tight. Screw a metal screw into the anchor, leaving about ¾ inch exposed.

Hang the Clock

Once that’s complete, it’s time to hang the clock! And be sure to get some help lifting it in place if it’s a heavy piece!
